Lady Filmmakers Film Festival - Dron’t You Love Me?
An atypical love story about falling for the wrong person
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Madeleine Dudley
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Dron’t You Love Me? was created at the end of 2016 to accompany a university dissertation exploring the concept of anti-materiality, that is, that by loving objects so much, we’re upgrading more frequently and paradoxically not loving them at all. The short film format was selected with the intent of sharing this message of excess waste in a humorous and accessible way.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
I’d encourage people to watch the film as it’s
a) relevant (exploring drone technology)
b) humorous (an atypical love story about said drone)
c) thought-provoking (making us question our disposable attitudes towards objects)
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The ultimate theme in Dron’t You Love Me? is neglect. On one level, it deals with personal neglect, heartbreak and unreciprocated love. On the other hand, as mentioned, it deals with a more material neglect, the under appreciation of our belongings.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Originally the film was to be narrated from the drone itself. A voiceover was to lead the viewer through the emotional journey of his relationship with the protagonist. However, this felt somewhat too cliché and trivialised the subject matter. A voiceover-less film turned out to be much more powerful.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I’m fortunate in that the feedback overall has been positive. I was encouraged to perhaps use more drone POV shots to evoke as much emotion as possible.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Whilst I agreed with the person who shared it, from a practical level, it was more difficult to achieve. The drone camera isn’t the best quality and is limited in the range it can reach. Additionally, sometimes you’d get a sneaky camera man in shot!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I’m looking to widespread this issue of antimateriality and also hopefully get some publicity to find an art direction job in the industry!
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Namely, film festival directors, journalists and distributors.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Above all, I’d like to give people a good laugh but I’d also like this film to trigger people to think twice about how they treat their objects.
Interview: September 2017
