Lady Filmmakers Film Festival - Between Seconds
two lost souls cursed with bad timing manage to bring their lonely lives back in sync
Interview with Director Nora Jaenicke
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Before making Between Seconds I had been working in online advertising for a while because it was too hard to live off writing alone, especially in a city like New York, but at some point I asked myself what I really wanted to do in life, and that, if it really mattered, it was worth giving it a try.
I always wanted to write and tell stories and Film is one of my biggest passions. I go to the Theater whenever I can and watch and analyze endless amounts of movies in my home every week, so at some point I decided to give the film career a serious try by raising money for the production of my first film with a budget (I had made low budget films, while working in advertising, before).
This is how my film Between Seconds came to be. I have always been fascinated with the topic of timing and how it reflects itself in relationships. How sometimes it's not just about the right person, but about the moment in time that sees us meet them. There were many other screenplays I had written over the years that I considered, before deciding on producing this one, but the script of Between Seconds seemed like the most suited for the short film format, so I gave it a go.
Asides from dealing with the topic of timing, I always thought it to be about more than that. I saw two protagonists struggling with their creativity, with their inner life. Alicia is an opera singer who lost her voice, Adrian can't play the piano, and he blames his ex for it. Together they are able to perform again, in a place beyond time...So it's not just the conventional "Boy meets Girl" story, it is a story about finding back one's true passion in life and that its a journey worth taking. The most important one of all, I believe. To Adrian Alicia is a muse, just as his music is to her. She has been listening to him play for a long time, before meeting him in person. He helps her reconnect to her voice, her Art. It's not just a love story, is what I am hoping to transmit.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Watch it because of the visuals, because it transports you into a magical world of giant clocks and beautiful Brooklyn lofts, and the dreams of Artists in a lonely city. Watch it because it's an independent film that is so hard to make. Watch it because it's a part of something larger.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The personal theme of Adrian clinging to the past, unable to move on, is a very universal one. The universal theme of love and timing and the one I mentioned above, the one of the Artist being "stuck" in time. Time seen as a constricting element that forces us back or forward, instead of living in the "eternal moment" of the present, where we can, finally, regain access to our own true voice.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The draft went through many changes, which I would have to find somewhere in my film's folder on my desktop, in order to recall.
It was a fascinating process but I am afraid at some point I got stuck in rewrites.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Amazing feedback. The film has screened at over 50 festivals and won 27 awards so far.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It has challenged it. I had no idea it would be such a success.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I am always interested in collaborations, in getting my work out there, so I can keep making films :) I have a lot of scripts that are waiting to be made.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I would be interested in collaborations with potential distributors, sales agents, buyers to help get the film out there and visible to a larger audience, because this will also help me with my next projects.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I hope it gets some attention and feedback. I am mostly interested in fostering collaborations.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What is it about? I am interested in what people feel while watching it. Whether they can relate to it or not.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Whales is my first feature film. We are currently applying for public Government funds as well as private American investors.
Interview: September 2017
