Cinequest 2020 – Disrupted
A San Francisco widower's thirst for justice is rekindled when a local killing is oddly similar to his wife's unsolved murder from decades ago.
Interview with Writer/Director Andre Welsh
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I had been trying to get my first feature film made for a few years with no luck and decided to write a different script that could be made for a lower budget but still remain in the thriller genre. I wanted to do a crime thriller but with the backdrop of Bay Area gentrification.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you like darker themed movies that still have some humor, then this might be up your alley. It's a crime thriller that also has some social commentary on bay area gentrification and racial stereotypes.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Each of the main characters has very relatable themes that tap into both the good and bad side of everyone. Hiding in plain sight and not being able to let things go are some of the themes of the film.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
There were 14 drafts of the script with the first eight being significantly different from each other. The film also evolved as we shot it since we edited as we went, mostly shooting the film in chunks of 4-7 days.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Mostly positive, though we have only screened it for three audiences so far so it's all still very new!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We are looking to appeal to other film lovers - especially those who enjoy original films that have social commentary while still taking the audience on a ride.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Possibly film festival directors, distributors...
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would like people to be taken on a ride watching a movie that is much more unpredictable than an average thriller yet still has some social commentary throughout its themes.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Director ANDRE WELSH is developing a feature-length film called Method and the producers at Realization Films have several projects in the works.
