Since February 1, 2021 a brutal military coup in Myanmar has seen 756 people killed and an extensive media crackdown. Seventy-two journalists were arrested and forty-two remain in prison. In this extremely difficult situation Toe Zaw Latt will offer a unique perspective - he just spent the last 80 days in Myanmar.

We invite you to attend a Zoom Q and A (followed by audience participation) with Toe Zaw Latt, operations director at Democratic Voice of Burma and award-winning journalist Dr Carmela Baranowska. Toe Zaw Latt will provide us with an urgent eyewitness account and discuss how we can support Burmese journalists. While DVB's signal is frozen it continues to broadcast from exile and through social media channels.

DVB focuses on uncensored radio and TV broadcasts. It was founded by Burmese exiles in Oslo, Norway in 1993. DVB won a Rory Peck Award for 'Orphans of Cyclone Nargis' and was nominated for an Oscar for 'Burma VJ'. Toe Zaw Latt has 14 years media management and journalism experience and participated in the 1988 nationwide uprising in Burma. He obtained BA (Business Administration) Bradford Uni UK, MA (Asian Studies) Monash Uni Aus. Toe Zaw Latt is based in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr Carmela Baranowska is the founder-at-large for We Are Moving Stories, the world's largest platform for new voices in film. She is a previous winner of the Rory Peck Award and first traveled to Rangoon and the Thai-Burma border in 1993. She researched human rights and film making in Burma for her MA and the responsibility of the media in East Timor and Western Sahara for her PhD, both at the University of Melbourne. An Australian, Carmela is currently based in Los Angeles.
