One in Five
A short film about an unlikely bond between two mothers, forged in the darkness of an episode of postnatal depression
Interview with Director Isabella Wing-Davey
Congratulations! Why are you making your film?
We’re raising money for production on this short film because we feel passionately about telling this engaging story about two women who come together in a moment of crisis, but we also want to build our audience and raise awareness about post natal depression. It’s about female relationships, but it’s also about the larger pressures on women when they become mothers. One of them has an ever growing list of demands on her time and energy and the other suffers from post natal depression (also called post-partum depression).
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
You should support the film because it tells a story that we don’t often see on-screen, an engaging and visually interesting look at this rarely explored subject around maternal mental health.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
This film is very personal to us, each woman in the creative team has their own connection with mental health issues and motherhood. But the universal themes of expectation and daily pressures are incredibly present in the film, and you don’t have to be a mother to relate to that and enjoy the film.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
We’ve been lucky to be invited into BFI Film London’s early development process, and recently went through a Story Day where we workshopped the script with other filmmakers and a Film London talent executive, which was an amazing experience, and has helped the script evolve into an even stronger script as we move towards production early next year!
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We’ve been really thrilled with the response to the project, we’ve got some amazing partners onboard, who we’re working with to increase the exposure of this important mental health issue, and maternal mental health in general. Such as MumsAid and Acacia. And in working with OneFitMama we’ve been moved by the number of women who are sharing their own experiences with us.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
On our Story Day it was fascinating to hear how people related to the characters in the film, and how shocked people were by the ending of the film, which was surprising!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We want to build our audience, we want to engage people in a conversation about maternal mental health, and depictions of mental health problems on screen, and we want to draw attention to our Kickstarter campaign that’s live where we’re raising the rest of our production budget so we can film this story.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
First of all we need funders and backers on Kickstarter in order to make this film! But we’re always looking for partners, for collaborators, for people who are interested in helping us tell this story and get this film into the world. Specifically we’d love to connect with journalists at this point, to raise the profile of the project.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I’ve been lucky to have my films play at top-tier festivals around the world, and I would hope that with this film, which has been written by the amazing writer/actor team of Michelle Bonnard and Zoë Tapper, we can have a great festival run and then work with our charity partners to have an even wider audience, to use to film for discussions and debate around the issue of maternal mental health.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film
What do you do when your experience doesn’t match up to what you’re told it should be? And how do you connect with someone in crisis?
Would you like to add anything else?
We’re really excited to tell this story. I’m thrilled by the script that Zoë and Michelle have written, and, as a director, I want to explore new ways of depicting isolation and mental health issues on screen, creating a unique cinematic language to tell this dramatic story that will engage and entertain people, whatever their own experience has been, and also contribute to a larger conversation about mental health.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
All of the creatives have feature films and television projects in development. Please follow us individually for updates on our next projects.
