Sundance / Berlinale - Symphony of a Sad Sea
Hugo, a Mexican boy victim of the violence in the country, flees from his town with the dream of crossing to the US to meet his father, who is the only relative that he has and to forget the past.
Interview with Producer Claudia Vicke
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Well, our first motivation was that we found a story that we know from the very first moment that we had the obligation to share, second our passion and love for the movie industry and in third place the power of the message that we have on our hands, the power of the regrettable world that we are living in. We know that we have to do something about it.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Just because it is a different story, he is not the usual victim. Hugo is not the common kid that we are used to seeing in the movies, and the way that we try to show him... I think it's a good but bitter experience.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Well... I think that the personal themes are something that we can't entirely separate in our pieces or in anything that we do in our lives, because it is our essence, so I think that in the whole movie you can see a lot of us, especially a lot of Carlos but about the universal themes I think that we try not to obviate what exists or what we see in our environment because not everybody sees the same... so it is a blend of what we were, what we see and what we are, but it's more the mix between what we think the portrait of the human race is and the dreams of a 16 year old boy.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Well I guess that as a Documentary it flows with the character because even when the Director has something in mind, the one that shows his life to the audience is Hugo, and of course there were tough days for him and we have to respect that so we are just there to document the moment.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Fortunately the film has received a lot of good comments and criticisms and a lot of people have been telling us that Hugo has make them feel his sadness but also his hope.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I think that when we do something that has to be exposed to the critics and to the eyes of the viewer it always brings to your life a different perspective.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
The first thing is the possibility is for many more people to find out about the situation in my country, because I think that we have to take action immediately and the second but no less important is the opportunity to be part of a platform like this one, which encourages and supports the work of women all over the world.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
That's a difficult one, we always need the greatest possible efforts and lots of people for things like this. For Symphony in particular we only need to distribute as much as possible, just as we are doing now in festivals and search for a lot of screenings so everybody knows about things like this... continuing with a sales agent will be great, then of course buyers.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
With touched hearts and the awakening of some consciousness would be enough for now.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
I guess it would be... What's the best solution or the thing to do to stop forced migration?
Would you like to add anything else?
Just to remind every one who reads this that we have to start thinking a little more about the person next to us and a little less about ourselves, we live in a world that tells us that we deserve everything for the simple fact of being and breathing and I think that it could be questionable. And please take the time to see our work.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Anybody would say that everything is related to technology, but honestly I've always thought that everything has a heart in it and an end or benefit a little bigger that its own - it's the only thing that will never be old fashioned.
