Melbourne Documentary Film Festival - Lambert - The Australian Dream
Feeling at home after 12 years as a refugee.
Interview with Director Gabor Kukucska
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
End of 2016 I was a bit lost after failing at building my first startup and after lots of consideration I've decided to follow the "Just do it" and "build on strengths" mottos. After vloging every day for two weeks I came up with the challenge of releasing a new short doco every week in 2017. I've started looking for characters with stories that I could tell and when I got connected with Lambert, I knew I'd found something special.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
There is soo much hate towards refugees and immigration in the western world and the media usually cover these stories from the worst possible angle. Being an immigrant myself born in Hungary, lived in Germany, New Zealand and now in Australia, I think I have a good understanding how much people sacrifice for a better future and that we're all in this together. The sooner we all accept that there is only one earth and we must learn to share it, the better. I hope Lambert helps everyone to see the good side of immigration.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
There was no script as this is a documentary film and I try to always just go with the flow. The quality of the film, especially when the story is told through the portrait of a central character is directly affected by how well that character can get his or her environment to play along. Lambert was great at getting people to participate and it shines through his story.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Overwhelmingly good. Again, this can be attributed to Lambert's charming personality which I have managed to channel through the film in a way that it makes it easy for people to relate and hence get emotionally moved by the story. People resonate with why not what. This is how inspiration works it's magic I guess.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Not really. I know the moment I've wrapped that I've got something special on my CF cards :)
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
The internet is a very noisy place and my vision with all my docos is to give hope and inspiration to anyone that finds them so the more publicity, the better, as cutting through the noise is not a simple task.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I have been submitting this film alongside with all the shorts I make through InspireFlix to festivals, however it gets very expensive real quick so I'd love to find sponsors that understand my vision and would like to help.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I just want people to stop and think. Humanity is at its most important crossroad to date and that will determine whether we continue to grow or crumble. A few festival nominations and maybe wins would also be nice though :)
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How would you feel if suddenly you became a minority Australian with the majority killing members of your group overnight and you have to flee for your life only to find that wherever you go, you're not welcome?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I'm working on growing InspireFlix and producing more inspiring stories that can help social change.
