Awareness Film Festival - Carless in LA
Katie Rogers attempts the impossible: to go without a car for 80 days in the city known for cars.
Interview with Director/Producer Katie Rogers
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Originally, I made CarLess in LA to bring light to the state of our planet in terms of global warming and carbon emissions from vehicles. However, as the project went on, it became clear that cars are effecting, not only the Earth scientifically, but the fabric of society and how people relate to each other.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because it's a fun ride! Most people can't imagine navigating Los Angeles without a car, especially before the days of Uber and Lyft. Plus, by the end, you'll probably have a different perspective on automobiles, and why public transportation and alternative modes of transportation are a good idea. Consider this a moment: Think of your favorite vacation spots. Chances are, you were on foot or on bike often. Getting out of the car is an adventure!
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
We live in a car culture and that means something. I try to highlight the impact cars have on the world so that we can shift it a bit and inspire people to try alternative modes of transport.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development and production?
In a documentary, it's easy to start with one thing, and then over time and with the information picked up along the way, change directions with how the story was told. We had 80 hours of footage that we collected over 80 days of shooting (we didn't shoot every day of that however), so the story really was created in the editing room.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
People love it! Especially folks who have a beat on the topic of urban planning -- they geek out. The only negative is that some folks consider the content to be outdated, but I disagree. Traffic has not lessened since making this movie, so until that happens, my job isn't done.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I've been relieved that people enjoy it, that's for sure. I really wanted folks to laugh while watching it.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I love that this site promotes awareness! That's why I made my movie -- for folks to become more aware.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We would love to have distribution!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would love for cyclists, urban planners, and environmentalists all over the world to have access to this film to help them spread their own message.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How many days could you go without your car? ...and without carbon emissions via transportation?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Katie Rogers is currently making short narrative films for fun. There is talk about another documentary about childbirth in Alabama hospitals as well.
Interview: October 2016
