Off-Identikit

July 26, 2022 by Carmela Baranowska

'Off-Identikit' is a documentary film about the extraordinary figure of Francesca Alinovi. During the 1970’s & 80’s, in Bologna and New York, streets were undergoing new avant-garde movements. While many remained skeptical, Francesca Alinovi, an art critic from Italy, was one of the first who created a new figure in the contemporary art world: the art critic as artist.

Interview with Director Veronica Santi

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

Because the story of Francesca Alinovi has been censored for 40 years. We no longer find her in art history books, her story of her homicide has swept away what she did in her life. It's time for it to be studied again!

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

To learn something that has been forgotten by the news and dive into one of the most exciting moments in the history of twentieth century art.

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?

Alinovi was a militant art critic: art and life were one in her research and this necessarily leads to reflect on universal values.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

Each interview shuffled the cards: the people interviewed had not talked about Francesca Alinovi since the day of her death, that is, since June 1983.

Off-Identikit

What type of feedback have you received so far?

I was pushed not to stop talking about it, despite the fact that it is also an exhausting issue to pursue.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

Talking to the new generations the name of an (almost) forgotten militant intellectual. Disseminating the culture of the street, the art that comes from the passion of those who produce and live it.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

journalists and distributors, anyone who helps to spread the film

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

An exciting surprise.

Off-Identikit

Would you like to add anything else?

"I remember the best interview I have done was with Francesca Alinovi" - Keith Haring.
Francesca Alinovi...who?
