Cannes Short Film Corner 2018 - K-Town
Kang, an immigrant broker living in K-town in L.A., struggles to save a little girl from the illegal immigrant industry.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Eunhye Hong Kim
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I'm a Korean living in Los Angeles who deeply cares about immigrant society in the United States. During my research of immigrant society, I've got to know some people who crossed the US/Mexico border illegally and got a chance to listen to their stories. That's how I started to make this film.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you know somebody who is not from your town, if you know anybody who is not from your culture, this film will get you a glimpse of how they hardly survive in a different culture and society.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Struggles of the undocumented immigrant, immigrant society, and marginalized people in a major society
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
I briefly mentioned above that I've gotten to know Korean American immigrant society in Los Angeles who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border. During the scripting process, I got help from both that immigrant society and school professors at the California Institute of the Arts.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Sad, angry, interesting, well-made, not a student film looking, but boring and slow. (hahaha)
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Yes, definitely. I've received very different feedback from the viewers. So I thought to myself, "I will try to make something more universal next time!"
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I would like to have various viewers of my film and hopley more screening opportunities.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
It will be great to have some distributors, film festival directors, and journalists to promote my film to the world.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
As a woman of and also as an immigrant, I always feel discrimination in many parts of society. Sadly, even in the filmmaking area, discrimination exists. Over the course of filmmaking, I always think it would be wonderful if my film brings a new and fresh view to the filmmaking area, which is overwhelmingly populated by the majority society.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How much do you know about the immigrant society?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I'm currently working on a thesis film about a woman who's having a Post-partum depression. Soon it will begin its crowdfunding and will be in production soon!
