Cannes Short Film Corner 2018 - 93 Miles
The night after defecting Cuba, a baseball player and his girlfriend are held up in a Mexican hotel room. The tension rises as the two become claustrophobic in this stressful situation that they are stuck in.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Noah Canavan
Watch 93 Miles here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I made 93 Miles to raise awareness for the issue of Cuban athletes, specifically baseball players, and the dirty paths they have to endure to make it into major league baseball, in the US.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
This film was designed to give an image to these stories, whether you already know of them or not. I hope this film would bring the subject to your forefront, and maybe get you to tell others about these stories.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Love and passion, within a story inspired by many true events. I hope everyone can relate to these themes.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
This film started as a feature for a class. I later became more involved in this issue and later decided to make it my MFA thesis film at Emerson College. There was no way to budget a feature. I played with different parts of the feature, and decided to go all in with the most important part: the physical defection.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I have received all positive feedback as for critiquing goes. I have been denied to multiple festivals, which is as negative as it gets. Some I really hoped to get into.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Surprised. By the end of editing, I had been staring at the same film for many months. I didn’t get all the shots I want, and the mistakes kept standing out more and more. It became hard to declare the quality of this film, when focusing on the mistakes each time.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Spread awareness of the issues that 93 Miles presents, and maybe bring more interests from other festivals.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Producers, and a Cuban director. I’d love to rework the feature script, and help produce this film with a Cuban director. I don’t think I am right to direct this story, even though I consider myself a director. I want the feature to be as authentic as possible.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I’d love to build a stronger bridge between Cuba and the US. But this film cannot do it alone. I hope it can help in spreading the love between the two cultures.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How does having a feud between two countries affect their citizens?
Would you like to add anything else?
Please go read the stories that Cuban baseball players go through, as the defect.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Working on perfecting the feature script, while writing a few other shorts and television pilots.
