San Antonio Film Festival - Every Tuesday
A mother, caught in her grief, visits her son's grave every Tuesday. But this time she encounters a young woman reluctant to grieve and together they must find the balance between holding on and letting go.
Interview with Director/Producer Lisa Belcher
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
When I met Meagan Cavasar in an acting class and saw her talent, I had to work with her! She wrote this script, and plays the role of Heather. I was drawn to what the story says about grief and specifically women and grief.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
I believe this story makes the audience think about how everyone handles grief in their own way.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The theme of grief is a big one in Every Tuesday. Grief is a part of life that many people have had to go though. And if not, maybe this film will help to create some empathy for those who haven't experienced it yet. It's a very personal journey and seems to be different for everyone.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The story originally focused on both women's stories, but given that it's a short we narrowed it down to focus on Catherine's story. During the editing process the story and order of things changed quite a bit. The ending was the biggest difference.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Thankfully all the feedback has been positive! Audience members have commented on how they could relate to our main character's journey through grief. We've also had compliments on the look of the film and the performances. This is only our second film festival, so we are just starting the circuit. We took home the Director's Choice award at the Fort Worth Indie Film Showcase. We've been nominated for several awards at the upcoming Austin Revolution Film Festival including a Best Actress nomination for our lead actor, Cynthia Fray. Excited about this!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
To be completely honest, yes. As a director I can be very critical of my work. I was a nervous wreck when we premiered. I didn't expect to receive the feedback we did.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I am so proud of the fact that 50% of our cast/crew are women. So if this continues that conversation of women and film, I'm stoked! Clearly that is the goal of this site so a huge THANK YOU for that!! :) Personally for myself, my team and my production company (www.jumprockpictures.com) visibility is always a good thing. I hope to get Every Tuesday out there more over the next year or so, as well as future projects.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Wow, great question! I would say first festival directors (still have a good year or two to play, it's new!), and then distributors (although it's a short, I've had good luck with past films getting distribution), and always journalists.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
As I mentioned above, I would love the idea that women make great films to be heard in association with Every Tuesday. Within the audience members going through grief themselves, I would be thrilled to know that the film created a feeling of empathy, or you're not alone out there, and maybe hope.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How can anyone assume to know how someone else is grieving? Or how they should feel about it.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I have several projects in development. Please check out my website:
