Cannes Short Film Corner - You Can't Hear Me
A socio-political outcry about the state of America in the wake of the Trump administration; told entirely in spoken word poetry.
Interview with Writer/Producer David Bianchi
Watch You Can't Hear Me here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
This is the third collaboration with my producing partner/director Chris Folkens. Once Trump took office we activated. I wrote the hook and passed it to him and we decided to start assembling the concept (basically how would the film behave artistically). Once we had that locked down I approached Malcolm-Jamal Warner with the hook and he loved it. Alongside Chris Wood we each wrote our own verses to align with the hook.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
It delivers a sense of empowerment. I hope that people identify with the pain and the struggle of these characters and find a root to attach to. In order to inspire them in their own worlds to fight injustice. We all have a voice, some of us don't use them. I hope this piece makes people want to stand up for what they believe in.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
No matter what nation you live in you suffer injustice in multiple forms. It’s the nature of humanity, oppression will always exist, this film shines a light on those oppressive measures.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
David Bianchi wrote the chorus and the concept and each poet wrote their own verse and the language is very specific to make sure that we are conveying the write things at the right time, being topical and not overlapping, while making sure we never go over 1 min per verse and that was locked down in rehearsal.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Well let’s let a critic tell you all about it instead of me…below is a quote from Movie-blogger.com
“You Can’t Hear Me” delivers raw perspective (from three poetic points of view) on the injustices in modern America including racism, mass-incarceration, hate crime, fear-mongering and human rights violations to name a few. The film is a haunting and daring exercise of the First amendment through cinema."
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Not at all the feedback is as very good as we expected it to be, it’s a powerful film. But it is polarizing, there are many people that just don’t agree with these views and that’s okay too as long as people are talking.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Opening eyes and ears and exposing the work to a larger audience that otherwise wouldn’t see what we’re up to.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of the above…anything to help get the word out about this very hot topic….more importantly, bloggers, critics and writers and viral people…that’s where this message will rise and can live is on the web.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Change and evolve and mold perceptions of America and helping people look at their own injustice. Also motivate people to stand up for what they believe in.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What does injustice mean to you?
Would you like to add anything else?
To any aspiring filmmakers out there… Pursue. Reach. Attain. Retain. Repeat. The basic components of any successful venture is to continue forward and be relentless.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We have 3 feature films in development and once that is in pre-production, while developing a series for Television revolving around spoken word films…David Bianchi is also an actor and he continues to work in front of the camera ona regular basis Most recently he is re-curring in the hit show Pretty Little Liars.
