Cannes Short Film Corner - Dire
In a cabaret evening of the "Spoken Words" type, Mélanie meets Sasha. One is famous, the other clings to continue until their very distinct realities come together through their troubling scenic performances.
Interview with Director Geneviève Sauvé
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I made this movie because the script inspired me. I loved the dialogue and the strange context of a spoken word evening, where the movie took place.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because your gonna laugh and be moved. Also, you’ll relate to the story.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The personal theme leads to the universal theme. It presents how your career achievements do not reflect your happiness.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Over the process, we realized that the movie was a drama. We thought it was a comedy in the beginning. That awkwardness (fun, performances, weirdness) still makes people laugh at the beginning of the movie.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
People are surprised by the effectiveness of the movie to create awkward feelings and tensions between characters.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
No. We knew it was a strange movie and that it would move audiences.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Be seen by the people of the industry.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of the above.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Create discussion. Move people. Make people laugh. Travel as far as possible.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Is career achievement more important than happiness? What is real success?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Festival. International buyers. Looking for a distributor for a new movie: Le Service.
Interview: July 2017
