Setting Sun Film Festival - Falling
Today is the day. Today she leaves her past; tomorrow is a new day. But what tomorrow brings takes a form she never dreamed of.
Interview with Writer/Director Jemma van Loenen
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
The film began as an image that I had in my head, and I wanted to see if I could turn it into a narrative. I also wanted to work with telling an emotional narrative with very little dialogue, as it turns out there is no dialogue in the end film and I think that it works extremely well.
Falling
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The film is very personal - about one woman's journey to come to terms with her own self, but it's also implicitly universal as every person is on a journey of knowing and understanding their self.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
A lot of the mid section of the film was never scripted. It simply came about on set, when Sepideh (actress) said that she wanted to actually dig the hole in the film, it was never scripted that the audience would see that. I told my DP to just follow what she did, and we filmed a 9 minute take of her digging process and the emotional journey that she went on. It was actually the part that ended up giving the film its dynamism and substance. Her performance was incredibly powerful and that improvised section ended up being crucial to the end product.
Falling - Behind The Scenes
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We are wanting to increase our exposure through the platform.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
The impact is to give a space to reflect on the journey of becoming. Everyone is on a journey, I wanted to represent it in an emotionally resonant and visual manner. What it means to people will be different for everyone, but I think that it's very personal and universal all in one, and a lot of people have said to me that it has resonated for them with their own life experiences.
Falling- Behind The Scenes
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We are in post-production on our documentary Bam Bam about female Muslim boxer Bianca 'Bam Bam' Elmir. We are also in very preliminary stages on a short fiction film Tom & Johnny written by Arden Pryor and to be directed by Jemma van Loenen. A comedy piece about a gay couple whose relationship is imploding.
