Interview with Director/Producer Patrick Green
Watch For Your Consideration here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I was mired in post-production on another project so I was itching to go out and shoot something. I reached out to street artist Plastic Jesus whom I had interviewed the previous year about his Oscar-themed art installations. When he told me he was making a “Harvey Weinstein statue” for the 90th Academy Awards I knew I had to do a film about it.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
“For Your Consideration” is a small yet significant piece of a much bigger story that shows how art can have the power to help heal and create change.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
As a filmmaker, I want to not only entertain people, but make them stop, think, and reflect. The film is very much an extension of the Harvey Weinstein Casting Couch at its core. Both the film and the art installation use satire and social commentary to incite a conversation about sexual assault in Hollywood so it checked off all the boxes.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Originally I wanted to document the blood, sweat, and duct tape that artists put into their passion projects. We tend to just see the art displayed on a wall, but not the hard work that goes into it. After witnessing the “Casting Couch” go viral and while watching the Weinstein story evolve every day, my filmmaking partner James (Armstrong) and I realized that this was a bigger story. We needed to dig deeper so we interviewed feminist street artist MegZany, Dawn Dunning (a #MeToo activist who was one of the first women to speak publicly about Weinstein’s assault), and right-wing guerrilla artist Sabo to provide a counter-argument.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
So far so good. A lot of the viewers have commented on how the film shines a light on sexual assault while engaging people to open up about their experiences and opinions. For a documentary, that’s all you can really ask for.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Not yet, but I look forward to some spirited debates. That's what a good documentary does.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I love that We Are Moving Stories is giving an outlet to filmmakers who are trying to deliver a message with their films. There’s so much content out there that it’s hard for films to find an audience, especially ones that are shedding light onto dark subjects.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of the above. The hardest thing about making an indie project is getting the word out. Media coverage or film festival screenings can help that. Eventually, we would love to sell “For Your Consideration” to a streaming site. However, the end goal is to build a career that allows us to tell more original and inspiring stories.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I hope “For Your Consideration” offers a bit of social commentary in a fun, thought-provoking way.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
No one is going to side with Harvey Weinstein, but I do think some people will question if a satirical art piece should be inserted into the #MeToo conversation. My biggest concern was what reaction would women have. I’m a male director making a documentary on two male artists who are making an art piece that is meant to “call out” a male sexual predator. Thus, it was very rewarding to have Dawn Dunning watch the film and give her blessing. She is the hero of the film who refuses to be a victim and I hope the movie reflects that.
Would you like to add anything else?
Support indie film, whether it be shorts, documentaries, films. Instead of going to see the next comic book movie stay in and VOD an indie film or attend a film festival or chip in a couple bucks to someone’s passion project on Kickstarter.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I just completed another short film, “Mommy’s Little Monster”. We shot it at a creepy 1890's cabin in Big Bear, CA. It’s a psychological horror-thriller about a mother and son on the run from an abusive relationship. It’s a personal story that deals with domestic violence through a genre film lens. I’m very excited about it and hope to turn it into a feature.
