BABS
Like a slow motion train wreck, we watch Detective Becky Rawlings plunge into the depths of alcohol psychosis and its grim consequences.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Brette Taylor
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I needed to get it off the page as a creator, writer, actor and sober woman of many years. Chunks of dialog and words, in many forms, kept me awake at night. What was going through my head was intriguing. I knew there was something I needed to say, but I didn’t know what direction these words were going to take at first. Was it a song, an abstract poem, a vent? It eventually landed here. It became "BABS." I needed to show it, not just think it anymore. Also, the entire theme of this film is based around some hard truths about active alcoholism. A theme I know too well. Maybe it will help someone else speak theirs. I hope so! That's what works for me. Another reason is, I've been in the business of creating other people's characters my entire life but the harsh reality is that if you want to play your desired niche roles, you have to create them yourself. My hope is that this film will cover multiple bases.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because you heard it was wild, offbeat, unusual and amazing! Something we need more of in film these days! ;)
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Art, in any form, often becomes the voice of a time. We’re in a monolithic viral pandemic. But we're also in an addiction pandemic. I’m hoping that by making this film we’ll be contributing to more awareness around the magnitude of this progressive, incurable & fatal disease.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The structure has changed numerous times but the essence has stayed true. Due to budget & scheduling restrictions I had to compromise certain scenes. I will eventually develop those for the series. That said, I feel it shifted into a pretty cool & abstract film.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The feedback has been extremely positive and constructive! I've learned over time not to ask too many people for feedback..as tempting as that can be sometimes. It's a fine balance between remaining open to critique while staying true to your vision. I was picky and structured with the people I asked feedback from. Most, never having read the script, were very excited and curious! Curious in that they want to know and hear more about these characters. I've received specific technical notes. Which has been a blessing in post.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Yes. Mostly from a technical stand-point. This is not a typical beginning, middle & end kind of film. It's very offbeat & mysterious. I take what works and remain open to change while staying true its beats.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I hope to spark enough interest from others to keep BABS moving forward. I'd love to make this into series. There's still so much story to reveal.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Producers, film festivals and a great talent agent who can help tip the scale in the best direction.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
In general, I'm curious and open to how it's individually received.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What is the relationship between Detective Becky Rawlings and Lt. "Samms"?
Would you like to add anything else?
I need to give a huge shout out to my amazing cast & crew! Every single one of them has been a tour de force! We battled so many unpredictable elements shooting during a pandemic! To say "Troopers" is an understatement!!
