I'm A Vampire
In the confusion created by the pandemic lockdown, 8 year-old Jackie believes she is turning into a vampire. As her suspicion is reinforced by her parents’ bewildering behavior, the imaginative girl creates her own plan to survive the confinement.
Interview with Director/Producer/Editor Sofia Garza-Barba
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
This film was written during lockdown and chaos, so I wanted to create that explosion of mixed feelings and genres that 2020 and 2021 sparked in us. It was such a strange period in time, that making a film about it, and finding a unique perspective was something I wanted to do so I can look back one day and remember that's what I got out of those years...
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
I believe it will make you smile, laugh, but also relate to the rollercoaster ride we all had the past two years. You should watch it because it's not what you expect, and that's always fun!
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Universal themes makes everyone around the world relate. Even if a film is in another language, the language of feelings is universal. So creative a feeling from a universal theme, or a universal "connection" was key in this film. We all felt scared, silly, and confused at the beginning of the pandemic when no one knew what was going on. The pandemic affected people all over the world, including kids. I wanted to make a film from a kids perspective. If the adults didn't know exactly how to handle lockdown, imagine what kids went through.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
I wrote the script during lockdown, and kept adding scenes throughout the first couple months. When I heard my friends and family discussing about lack of toilet paper, food, and even how they all messed up their childrens hair cause they had to cut it themselves. I felt it was necessary to do all this through the eyes of innocence. I thought it was funny how everything was adding up. Then, I decided to shoot in October 2020, cause I felt it had to be made the year lockdown was lived.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
So far, I love that both adults and kids love it! That makes it even more special. Also horror fans have shown a big interest, which is amazing. They have mentioned how unique and fresh the idea was, and how fun it felt even on a difficult subject.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
No. I am just so grateful and happy to see different types of people from all over the world, connect to a film that is in spanish, but found a connection to the story and enjoyed it. This is what filmmaking is about.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I want people to get to know the stories I tell, and hopefully find future collaborators!
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I would love to find distributors for this film. I want to try and get it into a platform like HBOmax or Amazon. I feel it would be well received by viewers.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would love for children to watch it, and relate with how difficult the pandemic was for them, but also get a laugh from such a difficult moment in their lives.
Would you like to add anything else?
thank you for this!
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Right now I am working on PECCADILLO, a coming of age fantasy drama film that got the green light via seed & sparks campaign! so excited for this film.
