SECOND THOUGHTS
A woman goes to the countryside to think about her life, but her thoughts accompany her.
Interview with Zora Rux, Elisa Plüss
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I once read in a psychology book: "When two people have sex, there are 4 others with them in the same room. And those four are the parents." I pictured this image and found it interesting for a film. Then I thought it would also be exboyfriends, friends, siblings, anyone be there. So I started writing the script. It turned out to be a very chaotic very long first draft and I turned it into a feature.
I think it is interesting to film thoughts as we are not able to see them with our eyes or cellphones.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
The film is a surrealist comedy about a woman who goes to the countryside to think about her life and her relationship, but is accompanied by her thoughts. The film touches themes as partnership doubts, searching for your true self and being influenced by others.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
In the film the main character Marie has to find out whether her boyfriend who proposed to her, is the right one to spend a life with or not. She is confronted with a lot of thoughts about her relationship and also her life in general.
Even though Marie is in the global north, the themes of confusion, doubts and not feeling ready for lifelong commitment are universal.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
I started writing the film as a short, but it immediately became longer than I thought with all her voices in her head being played out as characters in the same room. I then turned the film into a feature.
A big influence on the development had also the DoP Jesse Mazuch and the sound engineer Robert Hefter, with whom I discussed several script versions and who shared ideas. Photographing the whole film prior to the shoot made us think in images a lot and also shaped some scenes.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The best feedback was a 20 year old woman who wrote me after watching the film at Cinema Jove in Spain, that it was the best film she had seen in her whole life.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It surprised me that people are calmly laughing and giggling throughout the film. I found the situation of having thoughts present while the couple is having relationship fights, lying to each other or trying to have sex, funny, but I wasn't expecting that others would share my subtle humour.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
The film is on festivals right now and of course we are happy if festivals contact us to consider the film for them.
The film will is distributed by UCM.One ( https://ucm.one/de/) and opens in german cinemas in autumn 2022 and we would be happy to have the film in cinemas in other countries. And of course streaming and showing the film in instutions. So, overall, raising interest in the film and getting in touch with potential collaborators.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Journalists, film festival programmers, distributors.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I am happy if people feel seen in their strange-being and feel that they are not alone. I am happy when the film amuses and inspires the audience.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How do your thoughts look like?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am writing a new fiction feature film called MEN BEHIND FAMOUS WOMEN about men doing care and house work. I am also co-writing a feature film about a world where the genders are switched that is called GIRLSPLAINING.
