FatFlava - El EP (The film) feat Teoría, Lou G, Ghanjah Man, Ghetto, Khafela, Kame & Mxrea
Fat Flava goes out at night and does a daily night tour while singing with the rappers around him.
Interview with Director José Salvador Toj
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
In Guatemala there are many artists who do rap and the lack of videos motivated me to work in this branch of cinema.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
In this project there were many personal resources such as locations, the idea was to mix that with the proposals made by the artist.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script was created to record at night, one of the reasons is that the artists and we the producers have a job outside of music and film. The development of the filming was very daring because we filmed at dawn and the best thing is that we enjoyed it very much even though the next day we had to work.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The project received good reviews from the first day it was published, it had many video reactions on YouTube and reached people from several Latin American countries. In Guatemala we had the opportunity to see the concert live and it helped us get to know more artists. In short, the feedback was so good that it came to Italy to participate, which make me very happy.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Of course, the feedback changed our way of doing things, we try to invest more time in the projects so that the Hip Hop culture has high level productions.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I want hip hop music to be able to reach more countries around the world so that they know what we do in Guatemala.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I want film festival directors to come on board so they can give us their opinion on this film and also journalists so they can share and give us spaces to continue growing.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would like the music and film made in Guatemala to be consumed so that we can live from our art.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
In Guatemala, hip hop music is frowned upon by society, a rapper is constantly pointed out as a criminal. A key question would be why these artists want to make hip hop music even though society doesn't see them well?
Would you like to add anything else?
I would like to thank these spaces, for us in Guatemala it is a great achievement to know that music and cinema are reaching countries outside of Latin America. Thank you so much!
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We are working on the second Fat Flava EP with artists who write and do good Hip Hop.
