Revelation of John
To live one’s last days in peace and fulfilment in the company of a loved one. Light and buzzing of cosmic orbs. This quiet, slowly trickling film rejects the consumer world, medicine, and eternal rushing and pays homage to peaceful old age with a touch of spirituality and intimacy.
Interview with Director/Producer Andrej Kolencik
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
My friends and I wanted to make a nice poetic film that has humour in it at the same time. There was a lot of darkness all around us during the pandemic and we wanted to bring something to lighten up.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because it's unconventional, it has beautiful cinematography and sound, and it's set in a world that all of us would like to be in. And, of course, because, as well as being a visual poem, it also has elements of subtle humour.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I think during the pandemic all of us felt a sense of loneliness and isolation, or loss, and that's exactly the kind of thing that the protagonist of the film is dealing with.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Our film was made differently than usual. Because of the pandemic, we had limited options, so we didn't proceed in the standard way, but the opposite - first we found a location, then we cast an actress, and then we wrote the script and sorted out the rest of the cast.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Our film is not one of those that are story-driven. It is built more on the atmosphere. People who like this style of visual storytelling have given us positive reactions. And for such viewers, it is also intended.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It depends :D It's hard to expect absolutely everyone to like your film and interact with every audience. A film like that would probably be weird since people and their tastes are diverse. What's important to us is that we made the film with sincerity and that every crew member put energy into it.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We will be happy if new viewers get to know about our film. Everything else will be a bonus.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of them, of course :)
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We would like people to feel that they have been touched by our film and have been nudged to dig a little deeper. And we'd be happy if the success of the film helps us to do other film projects.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
We think that either our film will communicate with you or it won't. There is nothing in between.
Would you like to add anything else?
I wish you a nice day.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I'm currently working with my friends on several projects. The first one is a feature film, The Singing House, inspired by a true story about a mysterious elderly woman who used music to terrorize her neighbors. Another film is the documentary project Animals of the East, about children who care for injured animals in an animal sanctuary near the Ukrainian border. And the last thing is a crazy funny project with puppets from popular Slovak TV shows from the 80s.
