Creatures (miniseries)
A compassionate and naive teacher meets unexpected dangers when she arrives at a mysterious school for disfigured children.
Interview with Director/Producer/Editor/Writer Loredana Gasparotto
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I created this project because I love stories told through moving images. I wanted to create a new fairytale for modern times.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
You should watch this movie to see something original and refreshing if you love thrillers and horror movies and are curious about a rated-R movie with dolls.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I began writing the script with a theme in mind. I wanted to explore how ordinary people can become heroes. What creates a hero?
With that in mind, I devised a scenario and put the main character in it to determine how she would react and make choices.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script was initially inspired by Christian Anderson’s Fairytale Wild Swans because I love fairytales and magic realism and wanted to create an adaptation. However, through the editing process, it evolved into something wholly new and different, which doesn’t resemble the fairytale. It became a new concept.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The short film adapted from the long form has been successful in various film festivals domestically and internationally, which gives me hope for Creatures.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback surprised me because I didn’t think people would like it so much. It’s a weird concept, and I feel self-conscious about it sometimes. I’m happy about how it has been received.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I hope sales agents and distributors will be intrigued by this new idea.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I’m looking for sales agents and buyers.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would love for audiences to enjoy my film and at the same time become aware of drugs and vaccine experiments through the journey of the protagonist. I would love to create a live-action series from it.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
I want to bring awareness to the problem of vaccines, drugs, and medical experimentation on helpless people like children and third-world countries. It is tragic and evil, and we know little about it. I was inspired by the tragedy of Chernobyl and the thalidomide tragedy in the 50s and 60s. We might not be aware, but drugs and procedure experiments continue nowadays.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
At the moment, I’m focusing on finding avenues for distribution, but I have a new story in mind.
