Boclo
The real daily life of infamous rapper Comar Boclo, and toliara artist’s life in general.....And their fight to succeed in the music field.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Luis Herald
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thanks! I have visited a few countries and had the privilege of knowing the music business, as well as seeing how artists have lived in Madagascar for a long time, especially in relation to urban culture. That is why I produced this documentary to show that, there are things that are not right here. Unfortunately, it has become an artist's life as there is no clear structure in Madagascar.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you are in the position of the audience, you better watch this documentary because if you are really interested in cultural awareness, you will start to have a different perspective and see a new world for you in this world of art. You will also find new places as even Hip Hop flow is different when it mixes with local culture. You will understand the daily life of artists in Toliara, but the most important thing for you is to watch this documentary so that you will know the problems that Malagasy artists are facing and it has been a problem for many years but has become a way of leaving.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Things we are trying to bring up in this documentary is to demonstrate the problem that the artists are not profiting from their work as a commercial activity. Their income is limited based on the show and exhibitions. They do not enjoy their real rights and profit from their work as artists in other countries do.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
More precisely, I started from the daily life of Comar Boclo and other artists such as dancers and beat makers, I compile in advance the scenario of their lives and from there I took what is necessary to be recorded in the documentary. The surprising thing is that the fact that the documentary really tells the story of Boclo's life, there was a sad incident in the same week of the filming of his life, he was sued for child abuse and he went to jail for that.
The interview was not completed due to this unexpected event, even though we tried to show the documentary in a different way and it was successful and helped us to show what happens really to artists apart from financial gain issues or royalties.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
According to the feedback we have received is that everyone is satisfied and happy because they all feel that we transmit the voice of artists and spread it internationally.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
In fact, the feedback wasn't really a surprise for me because I know that, it is one of the points to be discussed with what is really happening here which will urge people interest to know about. Instead, it helps me to have a further outlook.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We really need this kind of communication because documentaries can be broadcast quickly and people can understand the real situation in my country where I was born in the field of art.
I truly believe that there will be numerous meetings and exchanges between producers, filmmakers, actors, etc. after the publication of this article. Thank you.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Distributors. Buyers and Film Festival Directors.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I want my message to reach the leaders and I also want Malagasy artists to come together and build an independent system because only the artists know the value of the art they do. If there are investors interested in doing business, that is one of the reasons for making this documentary. Because this is a free sector in Madagascar.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
If we talk about the type of music industry and the commercial benefits for artists, this documentary is still debatable because there is a unique type of music industry in Madagascar due to the contrast of structure.
Would you like to add anything else?
Here, I would like to thank Fleurion Randrianambinina and Jean Odilon Tsibeny who helped make this documentary happen and I also encourage Comar Boclo because during the week of making this to follow his real life, someone reported that he raped a child and he is still held in jail now, it's one of the things that I noticed because while the script I planned was different at the beginning, it has changed because he was held in jail, but the incident has boosted him to the real nature of his story.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Basically, as for us, we think that producing 3D movie series to sensitize the next generation about real African history is the right thing to do. It will be presented in the form of stories to be continued.
