RED BULL BC ONE 2021 VENEZUELA ARRIBA!
After 10 years without covering the @redbullbcone World Finals, @breaktownvzla's DJLG returns to experience the tournament alongside Bgirl Estrella, Bboy Lion, LIL G, and MINI JOE
Interview with Director/Producer/Editor Leonardo M Giron
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you, I had 10 years without attending a RED BULL BC ONE WORLD FINAL. Venezuelan bboys have been in the tournament since I introduced them in 2006. This time we went all together but each one to accomplish a job. They battled, LIL G as a RED BULL BC ONE STAR, and I as a journalist of this experience.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
This documentary reaches your heart, of how to believe in what you do and to accomplish your goals, with all the up and down experiences involved, but that never makes you feel defeated.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
It is an honor to be along with these bboys and bgirls that I know from their beginnings in Venezuela. They come from rural areas and ghettos, and just by dancing they made a living and became recognized by society and by their own families. They chose this sport to grow and keep on the right path of life.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
I just travel and record, the story builds itself by the outcome of the battles/events, a little bit of freestyle but with my experience I put a story script together.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I have been making videos for more than 20 years. This one is special. I am very amazed that it was recognized by other people than just bboys. I feel very happy. It is my first time being selected for a festival, and that feedback is incredible.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Yes, totally. Now I am more motivated about what I do, and I want to keep supporting the hip hop and urban culture. I think I can do better things with more support
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
It is great to have an organization interested in making my work spread to other horizons.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Everyone is welcome.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I think that my work at some point stands out. We as Venezuelans are very restricted in some things, and this film is a probe of how we succeed overseas.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Do you make money out of recording bboy battles? A short answer is nope. Bboys win battles, and I win a worldwide reputation as a journalist and video maker in the hip-hop culture. They battle on the floor and I battle among video viewers.
Would you like to add anything else?
Thank you so much for your interest in my work, you made my day!
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I have to put together my video recordings of the RED BULL BC ONE 2022 NYC, USA.
