You, Me & Her
Mags, a high powered, Latinx financial advisor who runs the household and Ash, Indian-American, a great dad who runs a struggling cannabis start-up, are stuck in a rut. They can't stop arguing on their first vacation alone together after having a baby until they meet Angela, a spiritual digital nomad, who takes a romantic interest in Mags. Mags starts to question her own sexuality when she becomes intrigued by Angela. Suddenly Ash and Mags start to reconnect over the idea of having a threesome in hopes that the excitement of the potential sexual experience will save their marriage.
Interview with Writer/Producer/Actor Selina Ringel and Director Dan Levy Dagerman
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
SELINA: We made You, Me & Her based on my first romantic trip alone with my husband after having our son. Life gets stressful after kids and tensions ride high, instead of a romantic getaway to be honest we were arguing a lot. Then I was hit on by a woman and to my surprise I found myself intrigued, which sparked a conversation with my husband that led to this movie.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
SELINA: You, Me & Her stands out because while on the surface it's a sex comedy about opening up a marriage on an exotic vacation, it's really a deeper dive into the dynamics of a long-term committed relationship. The film exposes the frustrations and heartache that come with not being honest with each other and ourselves.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
DAN: You, Me & Her deeply explores aspects of our own personalities and relationship within the context of the romantic comedy genre; exploring universal themes in relationships like honesty and communication. The stories we tell together are always extreme versions of our own experiences, we take aspects of ourselves and put them right into the work. Collaborating as a couple this deeply personal, self-reflective work is very vulnerable and can definitely be challenging, but as we discussed our story and these themes with other couples we found it was very relatable as well.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
DAN: For You, Me & Her we started with the sketch of what happened in reality, then we played "what if" as we beat out the story, then we dug deep into ourselves and our relationship as we developed the characters (then we needed shitload of therapy), then we started writing the first draft of the script. We always see the script as a living and breathing blueprint that evolves as we develop, prep, shoot and edit. With each step, we're refining the story and adapting to things such as casting in real-time to bring the story to life.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
SELINA: You, Me & Her has really resonated with audiences and critics so far! Not only have people loved the pace and energy of the film and how it showcases the vibrant Mexican locations, but they have really appreciated its authenticity and have been surprised by how much deeper the story delves into the nature of long-term relationships. It has been so amazing to share the film with sold-out crowds at film festivals so far!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
SELINA: We've been surprised by how much the audience takes sides between the characters! Sometimes it's almost offensive to one of us! <laughs>
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We are hoping to garner more exposure for our film as we navigate our festival run and distribution.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We are currently seeking distribution as we navigate our festival run.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
SELINA: We would love this film to open up a conversation between people in long-term relationships to give each other permission for deep self-exploration, which will in turn hopefully bring people closer together.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Can exploring sexuality and opening up a marriage be healthy for the couple?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
DAN: My wife and I are always working on new projects but most importantly we just welcomed our baby daughter Camila into the world!
