Cinequest 2019 – Nursery Rhymes
Why is a Metalhead singing Old MacDonald on the side of a rural highway?
Interview with Director Tom Noakes
Watch Nursery Rhymes here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
After reading the script for Nursery Rhymes, penned by the magnificent Will Goodfellow, it was a no brainer – this had to get made. Well crafted short film scripts, that really demonstrate the short-form, are so rare to come by.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
To challenge your preconceptions.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Growing up skating, I hail from a motley group that were judged before being understood. It was a quality in this script that instantly resonated.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Not by much. It was mostly just details that helped the films overall comprehension. Striking the balance between mystery and exposition.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Two things have stood out. One is that the stillness connects with audiences who have found themselves in a similar event (without giving too much away here). The other is how varied the audience’s understanding and interpretation of that event is.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I'm just chuffed that so many people have enjoyed the film, and that the experience I had reading the script, translated onscreen.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
It's just a pleasure speaking to someone about our little film.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Nobody in particular, but the exposure is nice!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
It was an expression of tone and cinema that interest myself, and the writer Will Goodfellow. Anything beyond demonstrating that vision is a bonus!
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What do you think happened in the film?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Will and myself are working on a feature film and TV series that we're currently shopping around!
