Role-reversal cautionary comedy. Three young hoodlums trying to rob a subway car learn self-identity is a bitch. Through irony and social commentary, this short aims to trigger a much-needed conversation about diversity, inclusion and sense of belonging.

Interview with Director Nino Aldi

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

I made Tribes because the project excited me and, as a director, I only want to spend time on films I'm passionate about.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

You should watch this film because it's an example of effective storytelling with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Many short films these days are "proof con concepts" for features, and aren't true films (in short form).

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?

Everyone identifies as many different things. Tribes explores this theme in great detail.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

The script, wonderfully written by Andy Marlett, is an award-winning script. The only alterations I made to it were for practical, production reasons to get it made on a budget and on time. Otherwise, I left the story alone.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

So far we have only received positive feedback on the premise, and overall quality of the film.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

Not at all. We are getting the feedback I envisioned we'd receive.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

Every filmmaker believes their film needs to be seen, otherwise, they wouldn't make the film. Awareness of Tribes, and the message it delivers, is the end goal for us.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

We have had many of the above reach out to us. We are still looking for the right home for Tribes to live.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

I want people to resonate with Tribes and, ultimately, recognize it to be a world-class short film.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

Who do you identify with?

What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?

I am finishing up my first feature film in March while simultaneously entering pre-production for my second feature film, Black Bouquet, slated to start production in Canada this fall.

About the writer, director and producer:

NINO ALDI is an American filmmaker based out of Los Angeles. Over the past 15 years, he has worked on numerous film and television programs and is a proud member of the Director’s Guild of America. He recently directed, co-wrote and produced his first feature film, Stillwater, an independently financed mystery-thriller. Prior to Stillwater, Aldi directed several award-winning short films and web-series while simultaneously working as a Field Producer for NBC’s The Voice for 17 seasons. Tribes marks Aldi’s 7th directorial short film.

A former journalist, ANDY MARLATT has worked in television, online, radio and print. He co-created and wrote the BBC television show Comic Side of 7 Days, authored Economy of Errors (Random House/Broadway), and wrote for several other British TV and radio comedy programs. He then stopped doing all that to raise his two sons. Then he went back to writing and won the 2018 Page International Screenwriting Awards Short Film category with Tribes.

JAKE HUNTER is a former pro baseball player from New York who has an impressive list of over a dozen film and television roles to his credit within an 18-month period, including an Emmy and an Emmy nomination. Jake just acted in a new Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones film called The Comeback Trail and he's also working on a new Amazon Prime show called Class Act - a series he wrote, produced and stars in opposite Oscar Nominated actor Eric Roberts.

JEION GREEN, a native of Baltimore, MD, is a Filmmaker and Artist. Jeion identifies as a Gender non-binary person of color, thus, using the Gender Pronouns of Ze (Zi) and Zens. Jeion is also a BFA and MFA graduate from Parsons, The New School. Jeion was raised by a single mother and has accomplished many feats although zi lived in poverty. Some of these accomplishments include; producing Zens first photography book Isolation de Meu (2017), Disconsent: Pedagogy (2018) a published performance piece in participation with performance artist Aliza Shvarts, and zens first short film Dear Mom, Queirda Mae, Ey Mama which premiered at Aperture (June 2018). Jeion is also known best for zens work with LGBTQ+ homeless youth. Zi has been a proud advocate for this community for many years and continually wants to improve the representation of Gender Non-binary and those of Trans Experience representation in art and film around the world.

Originally from Montreal, Quebec, PATRICIA CHICA has directed over 50 hours of content. She has over two decades of experience writing, directing, and producing award-winning film and TV for major networks and clients in North America, France and the UK. Exceptionally skilled at supervising every aspect of the filmmaking process from conception to promotion. Creative producer, acting coach, mentor, and trilingual public speaker. As a Chi Energy influencer, Chica is committed to bringing conscious practices to her work environments for an even more positive and inclusive culture. She strives to champion her team members through coaching, self-development and continuous growth opportunities. She now divides her time between Los Angeles and Montreal.
