Interview with Composer Jaimie Pangan
Why did you decide to compose this film?
My director, John Geronilla, was the one who approached me when he found my music on Facebook. He then sent me the film, and I loved it! I said I am interested in doing the film and we worked on it for about a week and a half, which includes the recording session.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
John's film is pretty interesting and the actors are amazing too! He has his own voice and I am sure others would agree to this when they see the film.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The music I composed for the film was based on what the characters were going through and I had a melody there for the theme that was rearranged in different ways. In watching the film, my director tempted most of it with the score from The Last of Us (game) and a bit of Ennio Morricone’s music. I honestly had a bit of a difficult time because the The Last of Us was stuck in my head and of course, I did not want to make something too similar to it. When I was doing the score, it took me the whole day to think of a melody for the theme, and basically did 12 minutes of music in 1 week. I did 1-2 cues a day and tried to analyse the characters on what sound I would give them as the story progresses. Given that the main characters were Latino, I did not hesitate to use the guitar for the score. The challenge for me, I think, is having to create a melody that sounds mysterious and memorable and at the same time, sort of be a cliff hanger (since *spoiler alert* the story does not conclude in the end). For the score, the synths were programmed, but the guitar and cello were both recorded in a studio. I do not think they would sound as authentic as a real instrument if they were programmed. Everything is way better recorded when you can.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
My friends who have listened to the film told me that they loved the theme I developed! It strongly matches the film and the atmosphere it's supposed to give.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I strongly want to engage more with other directors who would be interested in working with me. I want to be able to have a good long-lasting working relationship with them.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I think anyone who invests in my director's films will not regret it! John certainly is a pleasure to work with and he is very talented.
Would you like to add anything else?
The Wild Ones has been released in all major music distribution platforms such as Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon Music, etc! Link to these is here: https://ffm.to/jaimiemusic
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am currently working on several short films as of the moment and might start composing for a feature film and a TV show! *fingers crossed*
