Salute Your Shorts Film Festival 2019 – Sweater

Interview with Writer/Director/Actor Nick Borenstein
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I have been dancing since I was young and always wanted to integrate dance into my filmmaking. Dancing is so expressive and I loved the idea that Sweater could ground a character in movement and celebrate this intersection of film, music and dance.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Sweater is a celebration of joy and my intention is for people to leave the film with a smile on their face and a spring in their step.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
All of my films are incredibly personal. As a writer, director and performer, creating personal work is all I've ever known. Plus, I connect deeper to work by filmmakers that feels really personal and authored. From stories about my family, my friends and my lovers, I've always found those narratives to be the most interesting. Fortunately for the people in my life, I usually withhold real names in my scripts.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I've received wonderful feedback about the film. A lot of people have seen themselves in Sweater which is an honor. I make movies because I want to share my stories with others and connect over our shared experiences. I'm also thrilled that festival programmers have connected with the film and have wanted to share it with their audiences both nationally and internationally.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I'm really excited to share my work with We Are Moving Stories' audience of makers and storytellers!
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I am looking to share the film with as many people as possible upon its digital release in October. I am also prepping a feature film to be shot in Spring 2020 and want to build an audience and a community around my work.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Lotta smiles and sporadic dancing.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am writing a feature film that I'll be acting and directing in Spring 2020.
