Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Stefanie Abel Horowitz

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

My partner in the project, Katy Wright-Mead, and I wanted to work on a film together and this was a story we had told on the stage in 2013 that we both loved and wanted to bring back as an intimate short film.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

You should watch this film because it's a very human, personal story about a woman who feels insecure and uncertain in the world but manages to find a connection despite that. Also, it's funny and moving.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

The script was an adaptation of a play so from the outset it was an evolving script and a lot of the work was trying to make sense of it in this new format. Then, when we got on location in Maine we realized we wanted to completely rethink the final scene because it just wasn't feeling right the way we had envisioned it. It went from being a walking through the woods scene to a standing on the dock of a ferry station scene. And then, in the edit, we continued to refine the script with rewrites of voiceover, text chats and transforming a scene into a fantasy.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

Positive feedback! We premiered at Sundance which was a real treat! And since then we've been playing festivals and it's been great.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

We've been the most delighted by the amount of laughter we hear in the theater. We weren't expecting it. Even though we knew there had to be humor in the film for it to work, we weren't expecting people to find it so funny!

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

I'm always happy to have more people interested in watching the film!

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

We're happy for any help we can get but not looking for anything particular at the moment. We're mostly focused on the feature and how to get that off the ground.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

We just want people to see it and hopefully enjoy it.

What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?

We're working on a feature version of the short! And we're just about to finish the script!

About the writer, director and producer:

STEFANIE ABEL HOROWITZ directed theater for a decade before pivoting to film. Her first short, Up North, premiered on Short of the Week in 2017. Sometimes, I Think About Dying is her second short film and premiered at Sundance 2019. She recently participated in the New Voices Sundance Lab with an episodic project she's co-creating with Daisy Long. Abel Horowitz is repped by Daniela Gonzalez and Zach Cox at Circle of Confusion.
