Interview with Writer/Director Annette Bedrossian
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I wanted to challenge myself and create a film based on one of my favorite writers, Edgar Allan Poe. It's really a tribute to his work, to black and white film, to have more than one love, and that love transcends all! This was an ultra-low budget and only had two months to write, produce, shoot, and edit this project.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
You should watch this film because it is a type of love that many people dream about. It's a slice of life mixed with curiosity of the unknown, the darkness that can consume us if we allow it.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
It's about loss, love, jealousy, freedom, consumption, the things that make us all the same.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script was written in less than two weeks. I first had decided to use some dialogue, but I wanted to challenge myself as a director and decided to tell a visual story without any spoken word, paying tribute to silent film.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Mostly, that it's visually beautiful and a great tribute to Poe.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Considering this was my first live-action film, I was very pleased with the feedback and win at the Poe Film Festival. It has inspired me to keep creating and to believe in myself and to believe that women can reach their goals in this industry.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Like most women, I want to be heard, I want to be treated as an equal to my male counterparts, and I want to tell stories using multiple mediums.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
It would be nice to screen this film at other festivals, to maybe have it distributed and screened on a larger platform.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I want this film to inspire and allow people to think about storytelling in a non-conventional way.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Why did she choose to film in black and white?
Would you like to add anything else?
I just want to thank everyone on my cast and crew, and all the festivals taking the time to watch, review, and screen my film.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I've worked on several other short films (including animated ones), I have also worked on several music videos, and am in post-production on my next film titled The Patisserie. It is a live-action/animated film about Jacob, a writer from New York, searching to understand the void within himself as a first-generation survivor of the Holocaust, takes a journey to retrace his parent’s past. Interactions with the local owners of the Patisserie cause his entire about his outlook to change.
