Interview with Writer/Director Erik Bork
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Although I’ve had a career as a screenwriter (best known as a writer-producer of HBO’s Band of Brothers, working with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg), I hadn’t directed since film school (quite a few years ago now). And I’d always said I wanted to be a writer-director! So I started writing low budget spec features to eventually raise the money to make one. (Something I’m still working on.) One of the first scripts was a feature version of this project, called The Nice Guy (before the Shane Black film The Nice Guys was around). And a friend suggested I do a short version of it. So I did. I really enjoyed directing and did it mainly for the experience, the practice, and also to hopefully show that I could direct something decent as I work on raising money to do a feature next.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
It's really funny and also has heart. A unique, quirky story with some things you won't expect, that will entertain you and maybe touch you a little.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Some of the themes it deals with include parenting, loyalty, forgiveness, self-sacrifice, child custody for men, paternity testing, sex work, and unlikely romance.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
It started as a feature and I adapted it into a shorter story with the same primary characters and situation.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Film festival audiences consistently laughed at all the right places and many people told me they cared about how things were going to turn about and were touched by the ending.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Not really. It's been gratifying that it seemed to fulfil what I'd hoped its impact on me.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
To reach more people with the film.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Any of the above other than producers. Though I'd be happy to talk to producers about some of my feature projects!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I'd love it if people felt they cared about the characters, were entertained, and intrigued enough to want to know more about whose mind this came out of!
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Should a man who parented a child from infancy to age three, thinking he was its father, have any parental rights after that, when he learns that he isn't?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I have several feature and pilot scripts in development, in similar genres to this -- edgy comedies with heart, usually with challenged sexual/romantic relationships with some unusual conflicts.
