Outfest Fusion 2019 – Between Walls
Isabella, Mario and Cristina search in an app to do a threesome. They meet in a motel room between sex and drugs. Are strangers the ones who know us the best?
Interview with Director/Writer Ruth Caudeli
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you! After shooting my first feature, I wanted to explore darker characters. I wanted to explore sexuality as a way of freedom, and especially, women's sexuality and empowerment.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
You'll discover that all of us, as human beings, have secrets and you'll be recognized in these characters.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I always write about things that I know and are personal to me. These three characters are all me. But they are also universal, because we all suffer, feel, and keep secrets.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
I always change some things on the script during the rehearsal process, because I always create with the actresses and actors. We realized that some dialogues were not working, or that some circumstances we not believable, so we changed it with them.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
It's been a great year with this short film. We've been in different film festivals around the world and people engaged with the characters and with the acting. For me, as a director, that is the better compliment that I can get.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Of course. Being in contact with the audience makes me grow as a filmmaker. I like to see how different people engage with the story and if the story makes them feel something good or bad.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I want to reach more people. I tell stories for people, and it doesn't make sense for me to keep them for myself or not to ask the audience what they felt. So I want that more people to watch this short film and tell me what they think... that makes me evolve as a director.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I am not looking for anything in particular. But I always love to meet different people that can be a future partner for next projects. I want to learn from them, because I have a lot to learn. Also, for me it is interesting to meet people abroad, because I would love to film in a different country as well.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I don't like to think about the reception. I prefer to discover it later because for me, thinking about that gives me too much pressure.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Have you ever kept a secret?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We are going to start the festival circuit with my second feature film, Second star on the right. Also, we are in pre-production of two new features that we are going to shoot this year.
