Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Gemma Paul

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

Adam, for me, was a passion project inspired by one of my favourite tales, and movie monsters, Frankenstein. I wanted to make a tribute to Frankenstein, focusing on a different type of monster and a relationship to a bride. It also happened that 2018 (when we shot the film) was the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's original publication of her novel Frankenstein.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

This film should be watched because it is very different to other horror films currently on the festival circuit. It takes old school cinema themes and techniques and puts a modern twist on them. For old movie fans its a nice reminder of what made classic old horror movies of the 30s and 40s special.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

Scripts and films evolve constantly, from initial concept all the way through to post. It is not until the final edit that it stops, and even then sometimes it continues to evolve. Adam was no different. The original script was longer with a different external location and a number of flashbacks forming a montage. This montage was filmed but when in post, it became clear that it just didn't work and interrupted the flow of the story.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

Feedback has been great. As a niche film, it has received some great reviews, especially from those who are a fan of old movies. The music and cinematography have been particularly well-received and commented on.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

No. For me, the film is what we made it. I am proud of what we were able to achieve with very little funding and support.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

I would get in touch with others about future projects in development. As well as gaining more hype over Adam and the re-invention of classic monster movies.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

Ultimately at this time, I am looking to distribute the film further so distributors, film festival director and journalists would be great people to come on board.

It would also be great to bring producers into the fray for future projects in development.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

I would like this film to remind people of the old classics and the impact they had upon the generation of filmmakers that came after them, ultimately leading up to today's creatives. I want to show people that horror comes in many forms, and not all of it is gory. I want to show the beautiful side of horror; to show that it can be an art.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

I just hope that the film inspires people to either check out some old school horror movies for the first time or to rediscover them if it's been a while.

What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?

I am currently in pre-production for my next short film, for which I am looking for any producers looking to be a part of this project. I am already in plans to turn this short into a feature.

I am also working on several TV show concepts and pilots.

About the writer, director and producer:

GEMMA PAUL left a career in business to pursue an artistic career by training as a makeup artist. After gaining experience on film sets she decided to pursue her long-held dream of writing and directing her own short film. Now she is unstoppable, with two award-winning short films under her belt she is currently working on a third as well as a feature and several tv show concepts.

DAVID ROGERS started out directing and producing music videos for various groups at Shepperton Studios, which included flooding a whole sound stage for the rock group Asylum. Keen to help film-makers launch their careers, David has helped produce many low-budget feature films and shorts including Waste Disposal (2010) and Harvest of the Dead (2015).
