Chandler International Film Festival 2019 - 10 Syllables (#nomore)
After the justice system fails her, Parker sets off on an inspirational journey to turn her #metoo into everyone's #nomore.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Emily Skyle-Golden
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
During the summer of 2016, I was a reporter covering the Brock Turner rape trial. The headline I selected for my story was 10 Syllables because that’s what the victim had been reduced to an – “unconscious, intoxicated woman” – just ten syllables and nothing more. As a survivor of a violent attack during the fall of 1993, the victim’s statement impacted me profoundly and inspired me to finally tackle the subject in a screenplay, after almost 25 years of silence. When the #metoo movement began, I finally had the courage to turn my screenplay into a film.
#NoMore celebrates the idea that just one voice can start a movement. The amazing community of over 500+ women that were willing to share their stories with me was a healing, inspirational, challenging, humbling and life changing experience. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to shine a light on a topic that has been hidden in the dark for far too long.
We have a voice. We will be heard. We are a victim – no more.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Watching Parker set off on a journey to turn her #metoo into everyone's #nomore is an inspiring experience.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I think with the recent #metoo movement, our film, sadly, connects with many viewers on a very personal level. The universal theme of one voice being able to start a movement leaves the audience inspired.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Our film has developed into so much more than we ever imagined. Originally, we worked with women's organizations and asked survivors of sexual assault to share their stories with us for the "mattress movement" in the finale. 528 women shared their stories – that number has grown to 6,000.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
The feedback we've received has been overwhelming. As we've toured with the film, we've had a chance to meet so many brave and amazing women, we've held Sexual Assault Awareness Panels and events and led workshops.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I wish we could say that we are surprised by the number of women that have come forward to share their story with us - but statistics prepared us for it. What has been surprising, is the number of men that have come forward to share their stories and/or thanked us for giving them the tools to start a conversation with the women in their lives.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Our goal is to help spark difficult conversations and guide people to the resources they need to help them continue the process of prevention and healing.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We are currently developing the short film into a feature length version, so we are looking for people that would like to jump on board and join the movement - from volunteers to Executive Producers.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We hope to continue to connect, impact and inspire as many people as possible. We know it's not an easy film to watch – but the profound way it is landing in people's worlds has been incredible.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
How many of you, or someone you know, have been impacted by sexual assault?
Would you like to add anything else?
Thank you so much for providing a platform like this for filmmakers. We are so grateful for the opportunity to talk about our film.
