Lady Filmmakers Festival 2018 - Alien Baby
A quirky hipster and her straight-laced coworker come face to face with the unavoidable weirdness of childbirth.
Interview with Writer/Director/Actor Victoria Blade
Watch Alien Baby here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I made Alien Baby because I wanted to write/direct/star and develop my own brand of comedy. It's my first film as a filmmaker, so the goal was to make something fun and achievable. I had been writing a lot of comedy and wanted to produce something simple. Alien Baby was my first step in packaging myself as a comedic talent.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because it's funny. People take a lot of things too seriously in life, myself included. Alien Baby is a chance to look at the intense issue of childbirth in a fresh and lighthearted way.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film
I think everyone can relate to the freaky nature of childbirth. Everyone has had some encounter with it. Procreation is the common denominator of all living things! It is the most normal, yet most bizarre phenomena. I've never personally had a child, but I was a little alien baby just like everyone else!
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
This was a fast and straightforward process. I had this idea of two women connecting over this issue of childbirth. I quickly found the story structure and the dialogue just poured out. The final cut is very similar to what I wrote in the first draft. Once I found the right actress to play Meg, we were off and running!
What type of feedback have you received so far?
It's so cool to see men and women and people of all ages and backgrounds relate to the film. Everyone seems to click with it. It's thrilling to connect with audiences like that. I'm used to connecting to audiences as an actor, but to now get the chance to communicate through writing and directing is so gratifying. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and so encouraging!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I'd love to find a larger audience for Alien Baby. I'm also looking to connect with other comedic voices in the industry. I have a lot of projects I intend to develop and direct, so I'll need a great literary manager and some mentors who can help nurture those projects.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
All of the above! The goal of Alien Baby was never really to make money, but to launch my career as a comedic voice and to make people laugh. To add some levity to the female struggle. And to start to pave the way for a single camera comedy I'm currently developing. It takes a village, so yes, I need all the people!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I want people to feel lighter and less worried after they watch Alien Baby. I want to offer a playful view of life. And I want to make lots more projects that have the same effect.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film
Childbirth: sci-fi nightmare or nature's miracle?
Would you like to add anything else?
I feel lucky to be starting out as a filmmaker in a time when women are beginning to demand respect and fully step into their creative power. I want to be a part of changing the narrative of women in the entertainment industry.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am developing a single-camera comedy that I see living on Network TV. I also have a feature and a web series in development. I'm also a singer/songwriter – I'm releasing my debut album "Lo-Fi Love Songs" on the indie label Already Dead Tapes early next year! Busy times.
