Interview with Director/Producer Jacqueline Xerri

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

I met the members of the band Ruckzuck while I was working on set a while back. They were extremely inspiring from the moment that I met them. They spoke of their nomadic lifestyle and their unique aspirations. I knew they appreciated life in a way many others never learned how to. I wanted the world to know their story, in hopes that it would inspire others to take control of their life and live the way they truly want to.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

Audiences should watch this film to uncover the lives of those they might not normally interact with.

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?

A personal theme of the film coincides with one of the band members, Nick, who crossdresses not only for performances, but whenever he feels like it. His girlfriend, Faith, is completely accepting of Nick, which reveals the idea that love supersedes traditional gender practices. Universally, I believe the story of Ruckzuck inspires others to follow their hopes and desires, no matter how different they are from the aspirations of others.

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

Initially, the film was supposed to be centered around the band's lifestyle and music. After production, we uncovered a beautiful love story, not only between Faith and Nick, but between all three of the band members.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

Audiences have been intrigued by Faith and Nick's seemingly unconventional relationship.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

It has inspired me to make more movies that reveal nonconformist lifestyles and stories.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

I would like others to get to know Faith, Nick and Mack, because their drive can motivate others to follow their dreams.

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

As of now, the festival circuit is how we wish to spread Ruckzuck's message.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

Some people may not agree with the film's message, but as long as they are exposed to it, I've done my job.

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

How far can love and hope take you?

What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?

Right now, the DP of Ruckzuck, Millicent Jenkins, has just finished editing Teen Night, a short film that I wrote and directed. Teen Night is a coming of age story about a young teenage girl; a story that hits close to home.

Writer: Jacqueline XerriAbout the writer, director and producer: Before entering FSU College of Motion Picture Arts, Jacqueline Xerri spent a year away from her home in New York to study in Spain. With a camera in hand, she documented her travels, but was unsure of what she wanted out of her upcoming education. Two years later, Xerri is a director who aims to take inspiration from real life. She believes this process is not only therapeutic, but holds a certain specificity that is genuine to the human experience.
