Mammoth Film Festival - Fool
Myles, a simple man living somewhere in suburbia, invites his friends to his birthday party, but things don't go as planned.
Interview with Writer/Director Eryn Rea
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I wanted to practice the craft of meaningful storytelling and this short film is hopefully not my last. I am thrilled that I have been able to bring this story to life and hope to continue to write and direct projects.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
“Fool” makes a statement, and it gives the viewer something important to think about. Your time won’t be wasted.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The message in the story is something that can be interpreted personally. Everyone that has seen the short and talked to me about it had a personal connection to the main character especially. Universal themes about society are apparent as well, and addressed in a way that serves as a mirror to the viewer.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The story was obvious from the first draft, I just had to trust that it was a strong premise and not let words and pages get in the way. 11 drafts later, it was simplified and straight to the point. The week of filming presented new challenges as well. Details can be found on my LinkedIn page and website (erynrea.com). Things were rewritten or scrapped on the spot as needed, a wonderful exercise for any new writer / director. Those quick decisions under pressure can be scary but that’s also when you know if you can handle the realities of filmmaking or not.

What type of feedback have you received so far?
“Fool” has only had one screening so far but the response was wonderful. At that screening I could feel the audience’s emotional reactions, immersed in the story and the lingering effects as the end credits crawled. It was a bizarre thing to witness for a new filmmaker. Something about it being on the big screen, instead of my laptop gave it life that I wasn’t even expecting. Afterward, numerous viewers approached me with their personal stories about how they related. I had no idea it would be so well received. There were some viewers that even reached out to the lead actor to compliment him and share their stories.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The feedback has reinforced my original instinct that this story needed to be told.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I hope that people share this story, it has a powerful message if you’re ready to receive it. If it makes one person think twice about how they treat their neighbor, the stranger in the library, the friendly face that has no friends, then it was all worth it.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Press, film festivals and distribution platforms will help spread this story. It just needs to get in front of as many eyes as possible.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I just hope “Fool” gives us pause; take a moment to make a decision that may seem small but could be life changing to another person. I would like the viewer to subconsciously examine their own habits to see where this story fits inside their life.
