2018 NYC Web Fest - GRAVES
Ten years after killing a demon, five friends grapple with adulthood, real life, and the demon’s family, looking for revenge.
Interview with Series creator Terence Krey
Congratulations! Why did you make your webseries?
Thank you! GRAVES was birthed out of my anxiety of turning 30, wanting to jump back into the new media world, and a desire to finally honor my favorite tv show: Buffy: The Vampire Slayer.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this webseries?
GRAVES is the sequel to the supernatural teen drama you’ve never seen. It is set ten years after the world was saved, the big bad killed, and life returned to normal. Except it all kind of sucks. Except our heroes aren’t really over what happened. And now, the demons are coming back. And yes, that’s a metaphor.
How do personal and universal themes work in your webseries?
GRAVES, albeit a sometimes-spooky, sometimes-wacky demon show, deals with a lot of relatable things: the dangers of nostalgia, fear of getting older, and how we deal with trauma and depression. But also, demons.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Since GRAVES lasted for three seasons, the series definitely evolved over the course of those three years. Some storylines were simplified, while others were expanded. Audience reaction, seeing the cast/character dynamics, in addition to challenging ourselves as to what we could pull off, all influenced how the series evolved.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
People that have watched the series have really connected with it. I think that since the show has such a distinctly throwback VHS-style look, they don’t expect our characters to be grounded and relatable. The human ones, at least.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Early on in development, GRAVES did not have the post-processed VHS-look, and once we started toying around with that kind of style, people really started to think it was something special. I think that really helped us go with our gut and kind of just follow our id with subsequent decisions about how wild the show could be.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
The more eyeballs the better! We really think that GRAVES is a show that could connect with a lot of people, beyond your typical old school horror or Buffy fans. It’s really for anyone that has no idea what they are doing with their lives, and has stopped being a fan of their own birthday.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this webseries’s message?
Sales agents or distributors would be incredible! While all 21 episodes of GRAVES currently exist for free on Vimeo and YouTube, we really think it deserves a home on a streaming service with a more established fan base. It’s a great binge, and we really just wish more people saw it.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this webseries to have?
It was always my goal to create a series that was thematically auto-biographical, but also had a clear sense of style, mood, and tone. I think we accomplished the right mix of something that is super-relatable, while at the same time being like nothing else that exists in the web series space currently.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this web series?
What’s your favorite demon? (answers can be metaphorical or literal)
Would you like to add anything else?
Thank you all for supporting the show! It’s been an awesome three years, and we are very excited for what we go on to next!
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Christine Nyland (who plays Jane on the series) and I, are currently developing a horror film with 3311 Productions & The Orchard, entitled Maiden. It’s a modern-day, American folk horror film with a witch at the center of it. It’s going to be great.

Nominated for "Best Indie Series" at the 2017 Streamy Awards, "GRAVES" is about to enter its third and final season in 2018. After that, he will be moving on to the supernatural horror film "Maiden," which he will be writing and developing with Christine Nyland.
