Chandler International Film Festival - AXioMA
anybody can get their chance to start anew
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Elisa Possenti
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
During a complex brainstorming about disability, i found out that everybody, in their own way, has a handicap or is touched by disability in an indirect way. I lately decided to identify as Axioms the difficulties that every single person has to fight against daily. When I started writing the script, I created a simple evolution of the events based on the complex psychology of the main character, a young disabled man. During series of events, fragility becomes a slow rebirth.
An Axiom does not need to be explained, but is considered true, as in math. So, the past of the main character is an Axiom in the screenplay and the short film starts from the presupposition that everyone in this world is, in his/her own way, a disabled person.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
In a life lesson every person has to acknowledge in order to better understand the ones around them.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The main character feels like a burden for the society he lives in and for his family.
When you experience extreme sadness your body has a defensive mechanism making you able to not let you down completely... and this is what happens with the main character.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Honestly, not much. When i write a script – from first draft to last – i usually change just very little things.
When i have the structure of the screenplay, most of the work is done.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Amazing! About 60 festivals selected the short in only five months of distribution. An amazing and unexpected success.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Not much. I mostly prefer to trust my opinion and submit my job to a self-analysis. I’m not afraid to satisfy the audience. I concentrate on my storytelling style and take risks. It’s the only way to be original and to be liked for being different and unique.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
It is good to show your work. It’s also a great opportunity to be seen outside my country.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Journalists, i think.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I make films to tell stories. I just want to encourage people to see or discover the beauty in everything, as an artist’s vision.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
“What is your personal disability and what can you do to react?”
Would you like to add anything else?
Thanks for the interesting questions.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I’m in pre-production with my second short, Zagara.
Can’t wait to tell you more about it!
