Flickerfest - Outbreak Generation
In the midst of a global epidemic, Annie finds herself the sole carer of her eight-year-old nephew, but he has questions only a mother can answer.
Interview with Writer/Director Brooke Goldfinch
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Outbreak Generation is set in the world of my upcoming debut feature Splitters. It was made as part of the Lexus Film Fellowship and it has enabled me to experiment and explore the concept of my feature. It’s the first film I’ve shot in Australia for a long time and the fellowship gave me an opportunity to work with a new team, make local contacts, and discover exciting young talent.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
It’s 13 minutes of your life. Why not?
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
I often write elevated genre because I love examining how people respond to extreme circumstances but I hope the emotions feel grounded and real. The film is about family and how difficult love can be. The main character desperately wants to be independent and alone but when she has to care for her nephew, suddenly she cannot escape the burning need we all have for connection.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The short has been hugely influential in developing the longer form work so it was a terrific experiment.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
It’s been really positive. Most of the comments I’m hearing are about our two leads, Genevieve Hegney and Oscar Wright who was only ten at the time we were filming. Their talent and chemistry together was a gift and I feel honoured to have had the chance to work with them.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
It’s always so exciting when people have questions about the world of your film because you know you’ve done enough to transport them. So far, I’ve only spoken to people who really got into the work but I look forward to sharing it with some harsher critics and seeing what did and didn’t work for them.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I would love more people to see it. We’re just starting our festival run at the moment but I can’t wait to share it online and see what the wider world thinks.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We would like money for the feature please. Thank you!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
As with all my films, I just hope whoever is watching is drawn into the characters’ world and shares their emotional journey.
