Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Katie Micay
Watch Twentyfiveish here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I decided to make a web series because I’d made a half a dozen short films before but I actually really want to work in television. Making a web series allows me to explore the episodic structure and tell a story that transfers better to the television format. I managed to talk Jacquelyn Ryan and Kyle Bown into making it with me and the rest is history.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Our show is about a time in your life that everyone can relate to. So many things shift in your twenties and you’re having to really figure out what you want out of life.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Pretty personal! I was turning 25 while we were making this and so a lot of the feelings that I was experiencing I wrote into the characters. I wouldn’t say anything is straight out of my life but there are pieces of it sprinkled throughout. That being said, these issues are universal to the millennial generation. We have five very different characters so everyone relates to someone differently. We millennials are at a point where there are almost too many options, and our choices have greater consequences so that can be incredibly overwhelming.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The concept stayed true to form as we developed the project, but in many small ways it changed. Originally the story was focused on the relationship between the two girls. It was about how as you grow and change, so do those around you and sometimes friendships are lost. Really, it was about the complexity of adult friendship. That was very personal because I had just had a major breakup with my best friend.
However, as we started writing, we decided to expand that to show a cross-section of millennial issues.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We haven’t had too many people see it that are outside of our little bubble. We had our first public screening at Seriesfest a couple of months ago and that was the first time we got to see an episode with an audience. People seemed to really like it and it was fun to hear the laughter in the theater! We have ITV Festival and Orlando Film Festival next month which we are very excited for!
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
So far it’s all been quite positive! I’m excited to get it out for more people to see.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We would love to get the attention and support of established women whose opinions we value as we seek distribution. .
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We need distributors and those with ties to digital platforms who are seeking unique content and may be able to facilitate distribution.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We live in such an intense world of social media so it would be really great to start a conversation. Have people notice the show and then talk to their friends about it.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
When we get back together with those we were friends with in high school, do we have to fall back into old patterns? Should we?
Would you like to add anything else?
We’re really proud of the project!
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We wrote a half-hour version of Twentyfiveish that we would love to sell or develop further.
Interview; September 2017
