Lady Filmmakers Festival - Meryl Fuckin Streep
Two writers head into a meeting to sell their first script only to discover the producers they’re meeting with are Barbies.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Ava Bogle
Watch Meryl Fuckin Streep here:
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
I wanted to make a film that mixed Barbies with live action. I tried to hunt down examples of other filmmakers who had done this. Apparently, no one has before. An early influence was Todd Haynes’ Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, but his film doesn’t have any live actors in it.
I love working with Barbies because their faces have this creepy neutrality that allows the audience to project their own emotions onto them. Their lack of expression embodies the very nature of soullessness, and therefore provided a perfect foil for the human writers in MERYL FUCKIN STREEP, because the film is about selling out in Hollywood.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because it’s weird and interesting and unlike anything you’ve seen before. And it’s only 5 minutes.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
My film is about selling out and the seduction of Hollywood. I think for most people, regardless of how much integrity they think they have, there is something that would make them sell out. For me, Meryl Streep is the symbol of that something, because she’s the queen of Hollywood and…perhaps the best actress in the world?
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
Originally the script was about two writers who go into a meeting where they’re forced to give up the vision for their movie. After the meeting, they shake hands and walk into the ocean. It was a slightly more bleak view.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
My parents think it’s funny!
I’m premiering at Lady Filmmakers Festival, which is a fest I love and have screened at before, and then at Mill Valley Film Festival, which is very prestigious and I was frankly surprised to get in. Most of what I make is pretty niche and specific to my taste and sense of humor, so it’s always a delight (and a relief) when other people like it too!
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I would love for people to come out and see the film at Lady Filmmakers Festival on Sunday October 1st at 4:15pm at the Wilshire Screening Room and Mill Valley Film Festival (October 5th-15th).
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Film Festival directors to program the film at more festivals!
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
I would like it to make people laugh.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What is the thing that would make you sell out? Is it money? Is it a good bottle of wine? Or is it Meryl Fuckin Streep?
Would you like to add anything else?
You can follow me and the film at www.avabogle.com
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I, Ava Bogle (writer/director of Meryl Fuckin Streep), am about to take my award-winning one-woman show THE PLEASURE PROJECT on World Tour to Adelaide Fringe Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018. The show is about five aliens preparing to leave earth in light of an impending nuclear war who pose the question: can the clitoris save humanity?
