Hollyshorts - Us Funny

August 24, 2017 by Carmela Baranowska

Jim and Julia have a great date, ending with a serious conversation.

Interview with Writer/Director Julia Bales

Watch Us Funny here:

Congratulations! Why did you make your film?

Us Funny came to be after I realized I needed to make something myself instead of waiting on other people to ask me to.

Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?

This is a conversation that a lot of people have had, or have worried about having. I realized I had never seen this conversation happen in a film.

How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Thinking you’re too young to start the next phase of your life, and then just diving in felt really universal.

Us Funny

How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?

The final script and footage had about 10 extra pages of content in it, in which Jim and Julia spend half of the day with their respective friends. We realized in the edit that for a short film it was much too long, and it was more interesting to focus on their day and interactions together.

What type of feedback have you received so far?

All very positive, we’ve been very lucky.

Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?

It has been really cool to see audiences of all generations connect and relate to the film.

What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?

Alternate audiences!

Us Funny

Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?

I’m always open to meeting new people and talking about this film and film in general, but I’m truly happy and satisfied with how this short has already reached people.

What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?

I hope for audiences to connect to these characters, and I hope that young filmmakers see this short and realize that they can make something meaningful on a small budget. Go out and create, don’t wait for someone else to validate your creativity.

Us Funny - Behind the scenes

What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?

How will millennials have what it takes to be parents?

What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?

I am currently in post-production for an Interactive pilot that I wrote, directed, and acted in and am pitching a pilot around right now.
