Woods Hole Film Festival Best Short Doco Winner - Patagonia Azul
Short documentary about the disconnection we have with the ocean, and how we can change this situation with a deeper understanding of Nature and the close bond we have with it. Following a group of scientist in search of the Blue Whale in northern Patagonia, an encounter with the biggest animal in the world, and the role science plays in conservation.
Interview with Writer/Director Daniel Casado
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
We wanted to share with people, the treasures we have in Patagonia; blue whales, fjords, wildlife, communities. Also we wanted to send a message about the importance of doing things differently. We need to stop and think if we want to keep going as humanity.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Because you will have the chance of experiencing a piece of the Real Patagonia, and be part of a multicultural, multidisciplinary team that have been trying to understand the biggest animal in the world. We tried to connect through the beauty of the place.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Conservation of the natural world, humans considered as a part of it, has been my life motivation for many years, so this documentary crosses both personal and universal themes.
For me, this is an urgent message, one that is calling us to stop, think and unite to change the course of where things are going.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
It was hard to find the right story to tell because it´s a big project, that has gone for more than 5 years, so it did evolve a lot. I always thought that the stories find their own way through the process, and new paths unfold all the time. We are happy with the results.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
Very good feedback. I think Nature, and its beauty is something that connects deeply with people, so we received good feedback. We won the best short documentary at the Woods Hole Film Fest, and first runner up from the audience, on our first screening, so we are super happy.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Both. It´s hard to make everyone happy, but we were very honest with our story, so after all, that´s what counts.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Hopefully, that more people will watch it, and know about what´s going on in Patagonia.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
I guess all are welcome aboard. It´s a universal message that come from one of the last wild places in the world.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Hopefully we would like that the film will make you think, and wonder. If that happens, it´s all we need.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Where are we going as humanity? Can we keep devastating Nature, or we can shift direction?
What´s the REAL value of things?
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We are working on different projects right now, most of them based in Patagonia.
We are developing a documentary about the cycle of water, a key component of the environment. Also doing some scientific work with whales, and covering national Parks and remote areas in Patagonia, and how those relate to people.
