Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you. Everyone has that friend that's bursting with life and full of potential. The concept of the show was stuck in a cycle of drunken conversations until I cracked and pushed to materialize it. It's an exploration into a widening gap in Australian Society, those who work 9-5 and those who don't, using the subculture of skateboarding to drive the story.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
I hope that it's viewed as a unique insight into our hero's world. It's a world that isn't as accessible for most people and I wanted to shed light on the beauty and chaos in it all.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Drugs and alcohol are an epidemic that a huge percentage of the population's struggling with, in some fucked up way I still see a Romantic notion in all of it. Maybe that's just my privileged take on poison, but I pushed to show perspective from both angles.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
When we finally moved from pub concept to shooting we pushed ahead quickly. All I needed, to begin with, was the two of us and my camera I didn't want any preordained outcomes so we left story structure loose in the beginning. I trusted in his character that sooner or later something dramatic would surface and we would negotiated story around whatever arose.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
I couldn't believe it was accepted into so many film festivals around the world. I'm still laughing to think people in Switzerland watched our little project out of Melbourne.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
I think to see a reflection of the heavy hitting drinking culture along with some of the comments I've received about it struck a nerve in me.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
I just want an audience.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
Producers or buyers would be cool. I plan to do another season with nicer production value and hopefully a few more hands than just mine to help out.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
Beyond being something interesting and real. I think the impact should be individual, if anything speaks, you have the choice to take something from it or not.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
What was real and what wasn't?
Would you like to add anything else?
Anyone in Vancouver that wants to collaborate let me know.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
A new season towards the end of the year.
Interview: August 2017
