Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
Thank you! I walked into my boss’s office one day and noticed a new painting on her wall. I really loved it and thought it was just a beautiful piece so I asked her about it. She told me that she got it from a local artist named Sam Green. I looked him up and found his website and instagram account. The first thing that struck me besides the paintings themselves was where he was doing the painting. Everything was done outside, no matter what the weather. This seemed like a really interesting way to work and that’s when I realized it might make a really interesting documentary. I emailed Sam and told him about my idea to document him painting and he was more than happy to be a part of it.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
This is the story of one local artist, but it’s also relevant to many different types of artist in many different locations. It tells the story of how much he loves what he does and why he does it. To me this is a very important story to tell.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
There really wasn’t a script that we worked off of. Rather, it all started with just asking Sam a few questions and the better we got to know Sam as an artist the more the film evolved. His answers to our questions really inspired how we shot the film and why it was so important to us to film him painting outside. We really wanted to film to reflect what his experience was like painting this piece.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
So far I’ve received a lot of positive feedback for the film. I think viewers really enjoy seeing the entire process of creating the painting from beginning to end. I know that it has really helped Sam’s work get noticed, which I’m really happy about. It’s nice to be able to help local artists succeed.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
My hope is that by being featured on your site the film will reach a much larger audience than it could if I were to only share it on my personal social media accounts.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
My hope is that people will love the film and that it can bring recognition to local artists like Sam. In such a small community like Providence, where everything is so close-knit, it can be tough for artists to expand and get outside recognition. I would hope that any exposure the film and Sam’s work can get will show a side of Providence and the local art community that a larger audience might not have been able to experience.
Would you like to add anything else?
I want to thank Sam Allerton Green for letting me document his process, without his talent this story wouldn’t exist! I also want to thank the people who helped me bring this film to life including: Justin Hebert and Stephen Petto.
What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
We are currently thinking about different art mediums that would translate to film well and that would be interesting to document.
