Cannes Short Film Corner - The Lords and Other Creatures
An imprudent lovers' meeting at a cemetery takes a life-or-death turn.
Interview with Writer/Producer Natalie Lauer and Director Ryan Kibby
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
We wanted to tell a story about being in love with the wrong person and take it to an allegorical, logical end.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
If you have been in love and tormented by doubt if you're with the wrong person then you'll find relatable darkness and hope in our twisted story
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
The 'soul' shot flying over the cemetery mausoleum row transitioning to a suburban row of houses shows the parallel death trapped from the bad choice. Can the person make the hard choice to escape risking death or pain of the breakup? How many are dead and dying inside their suburban 'marble' house Nate promised Vera.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
The script had two drafts but the location and cast were picked for the story.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
We got praise that we told a risky story and for the wonderful score by Scott McDavid and Sweet Rose song by Eileen Jewel.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
The negative has been a longer than festivals want 22min cut. It's not a surprise but a disappointment that creative storytelling has to bow to scheduling and sales.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
We would like to help and inspire people and of course to tell more stories.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
We were offered distribution (after over fifty rejections) in France and option in 3 additional territories. I look for all of the mentioned for current and future productions and welcome all new long terms relationships as our partners.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
If we can't make one feel, then it should make people think and at the very least remember this story.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Is anyone innocent when it comes to desire?
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
Working on a documentary about a roller derby team Hidden City Derby Girls and a pilot Boomer Hogs in post production.
Interview: July 2017
