St Kilda Film Festival - William Mackinnon: Psychological Landscapes
An experimental mini documentary showcasing the work of painter William Mackinnon.
Interview with Writer/Director/Producer Leo Baker
Congratulations! Why did you make your film?
This is a project I made recently showcasing the artwork of fine artist painter William Mackinnon. I have followed Will’s career since his first shows 20 years ago, and have had a great admiration for his work. Both growing up with a love of the coast and surfing, we share a similar history, creative philosophy and affinity with their surroundings. I decided to enter it as a short doco / experimental piece for SKFF this year.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
Are you interested in being taken out of your world and taken on a philosophical exploration? Exploring various emotional states, informed by the the landscape, Will explores how it feels to be in this world through his 'Psychological Landscapes’.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
Universally, everyone feels, everyone has memories, nostalgia, sadness and happiness, and everyone has some perception of artistic interest.
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
We adapted the script from a speech that Will gave at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, stripped it back and made it more about connecting a feeling with the viewer.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
People love Wills artwork and the 5 minutes of emotive escapism the film provides.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
Only given me a spring in my step.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
The more exposure the better. It’s always excellent to engage with people who are interested in art of filmmaking.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
The best exposure would be through the art world enthusiasts, more so than film enthusiasts, because Will’’s artwork will be the driving interest.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
The goal was always to showcase Will’s work, build his following and elevate him more art buyers and gallery curators nationally and internationally.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
Art perspective and opinion is in the eye of the beholder.
Would you like to add anything else?
Hope you like it!
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
I am still working on The Will To Fly documentary international release whilst developing new long form material.
Interview: May 2017
