Interview with Producer Hayley Adams and Writer Alyce Adams
Congratulations! Why did you make your web series?
We were watching so many web series that we loved and we really wanted to be a part of this new movement of online creators, so we thought we would make our own so we could join them. Essentially just trying to mimic the cool kids.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this web series?
Harry Potter! Buffy! Gilmore Girls! We’ve got every 90s-00s reference you could ever want. Also we’ve tied you to your chair and aren’t going to let you leave until you watch it anyway.
How do personal and universal themes work in your web series?
Friendship is the biggest theme in our series and essentially structures every episode, even though we never see the characters say out loud that they’re best friends or hug. I think it’s more realistic that their actions speak louder than words, whether it be by facing their fears and singing a karaoke song with them or saving them from choking into an early grave a la Joffrey from Game of Thrones.
How have the script and web series evolved over the course of their development?
All of the episodes went through a number of drafts before making it into production. Hayley (producer and co-creator) is the first one to read and give notes once the initial draft is done, then it goes to the director for their thoughts and if we have time for a cast read through, then the actors notes are also taken into account. The finale episode was tweaked the most as it was longer and a much bigger undertaking, so we really wanted to do the idea justice. However, in the world of web series everything in general is done fast and there is never enough time, which means the turnaround time from development to production happens quick.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
To our face? Hugely positive.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
We’ve been surprised by the type of audience we’ve attracted. The show being about two nerdy girls, we expected our audience to be exactly that, and while they definitely are, but some of our most vocal fans have been men, which we did not expect but is totally cool!
What are you looking to achieve by having your web series more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
Like any filmmaker, we just want people to watch our stuff and for people to connect to it. There’s nothing better than when someone tells you they enjoyed or laughed at your piece of work that you’ve spent months slaving over to get made.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this web series’ message?
Does anyone know the contact number for Joss Whedon or can put this series in front of JK Rowling? That would definitely help amplify our web series message.
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
We created this series because as geek girls ourselves, we felt under represented in mainstream media. It will be worth it to us if we can make an impact on other geeky girls who feel the same and let them know that they’re not alone and owning several different editions of Harry Potter is totally fine (don’t judge me.)
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this web series?
Which is better - the Star Wars prequels or originals? That won’t just spark a debate. It’ll create a war.
Would you like to add anything else?
Wonder Woman was great. Everyone please go see it.
What are the key creatives developing or working on now?
More web series ideas! Apparently we love being poor.
